Pregabalin in the Treatment Against Pain

Pregabalin is a painkiller vastly used for the management of nerve pain (neuropathic pain) when other types of painkillers have failed to work. Nerve pain isn’t the type of pain that can be relieved by traditional painkillers, other appropriate medication such as pregabalin may be necessary. Pregabalin may also be used in conjunction with other painkillers without a problem to boost and speed up relief.

In the modern world, we live in, pain is one of the most common medical conditions. It can affect people of any age and at any time. As a matter of fact, pain is the leading cause of disabilities worldwide. As such, it becomes quite important to understand that not all types of pain are the same. When it comes to pregabalin, there is a handful of other types of pain other than nerve pain that this medication provides relief for.

Painful menstruation may be treated with pregabalin by reducing uterine contractions and relieving cramping sensations. Post-operative and post-traumatic pain – these are also treated with pregabalin as it reduces inflammation from surgery and trauma on your body, allowing you to move around more comfortably after your operation or injury has healed.

What Is Nerve Pain?

Nerves transmit information between the brain and the rest of the body.  When they become damaged or injured as a result of a health condition or because of overuse or repetitive motion and strain injuries (such as typing or playing sports), they send incorrect signals to the brain. This causes a pain called nerve pain also known as neuralgia or neuropathic pain.

Nerve pain is very different from other kinds of pain in the discomfort that it creates. Depending on the affected area of the body, nerve pain will cause different sensations. The main types of nerve pain include burning nerve pain. This type of pain may occur with certain diseases such as shingles (herpes zoster) or diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage caused by diabetes).

Another type of nerve pain is painful pins and needles. Pins and needles most commonly occur after an injury or when sleeping on a numb arm or leg due to pressure on nerves in the neck (cervical spine) or lower back (lumbar spine).

What Kind of Drug Is Pregabalin?

Pregabalin, sold under the brand name Lyrica, belongs to a class of drugs called gabapentins. It is also an anti-epileptic or anticonvulsants, which are used to reduce seizures in people with epilepsy.  By its mode of action, pregabalin is known as a calcium channel blocker.

Pregabalin works as a painkiller by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain and spinal cord. It also blocks calcium channels in nerves, which prevents them from transmitting pain signals and reduces inflammation around damaged nerves. Being a gabapentin, this medication is designed to function as the inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA, functions.

This drug has an interesting history. It was first developed in the 1970s as a medicine for blood pressure, but it wasn’t approved for human use until 1995. The FDA approved pregabalin as an anticonvulsant in 2004 under the brand name Lyrica. In 2005, it was approved for use as a treatment for anxiety disorders and pain associated with fibromyalgia. Later in 2007, it was approved for treating neuropathic pain associated with spinal cord injury (SCI). In 2009, it was approved for treating fibromyalgia and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).

How Should I Take Pregabalin?

Pregabalin comes in tablet form and is taken orally. The recommended dose of pregabalin for pain management depends on the type of pain being treated and the patient’s other health conditions. The dose should be adjusted to individual needs by a physician or other healthcare professional based on each patient’s response to treatment with this medication, potential side effects, and other factors.

It can be taken with or without food, but it should be taken at evenly spaced intervals every day. When taking pregabalin for pain management, you should start with a low dose. The typical starting dose for pregabalin for pain management is 75 mg 3 times per day (150 mg daily) for one week before increasing to 300 mg per day for four weeks.

One important feature of this medication is that you may have to be patient before enjoying the full benefits. This is because the dosage is progressively increased to effective levels. Moreover, it is discouraged to suddenly stop taking the medication without the proper advice of your physician as adverse withdrawal symptoms may result. Otherwise, this drug has mild side effects that occasionally occur in a few individuals.
