Tips To Help Your Child Learn A Foreign Language Faster

Being bilingual or multilingual can get your child ahead in life because it has many benefits. It equips them for careers and travels abroad and improves their communication skills. What’s more, children who study other languages are better with abstract concepts, imaginative, and even more flexible regarding their thinking. So, if you are considering helping your child learn a new language, you are making a good decision as a parent.

While learning a foreign language can be pretty exciting, it can also be challenging, especially for kids. That’s why you need to offer them your support and help them learn the new language as fast as possible. In this article, we discuss incredible tips that can help you as a parent help your child learn a foreign language faster. Let’s delve into them.

Tips to help you assist your child in learning a foreign language faster

1. Get started early

Every newborn has the capacity to mimic any language’s sounds. However, by the time a baby is ten months old, he starts to focus on the sounds that are happening around him. Therefore, introducing a second language to your child during the first year of life is advisable if you want them to acquire it. For the baby to be fully “immersed” in the second language, it is best if any member of the family or nanny speaking the new language.

It is recommended to wait until your child is about 2-1/2 years old to introduce the second language or until after he has experienced a “vocabulary explosion” in his first language, which typically starts at 18 to 20 months.

2. Speak the language yourself too

Speak to your child as soon as possible in the languages you already know if you are bilingual or multilingual. Children are introduced to multilingualism early on in life and in a very natural way through continuous exposure.

A head starts on language learning is also beneficial because it makes it simpler for children to learn new language skills later in life. This is because they will perceive multilingualism as natural, have a foundation in the sounds and grammar of the new language and even have a basic understanding of how to learn a new language from scratch.

A bit active learning can help set the foundation for a good relationship with the new language they are learning for life, on top of the passive learning they get if they speak the new language at home. You can try integrating new languages into your family’s regular activities by engaging in enjoyable vocabulary exercises with your child each night using kid-friendly flashcards or language-learning applications.

3. Find the child a class.

You can register your child in a language lesson for kids if they don’t have the opportunity to acquire a second language at home. Some schools offer foreign language lessons for children as young as two years old, while others offer programs for preschoolers and students in upper grades. Make sure a class fits the following requirements while searching for one:

The tutor must be a native speaker. Before puberty sets in, kids who learn a foreign language have the chance to acquire a near-native accent. Because of this, kids need to learn how to repeat words and phrases correctly. Additionally, look for a program where the instructor speaks just the foreign language in class (no English allowed!), this will immerse the students in its sounds.

Kids find it engaging and interesting. Language instruction in a children’s class should include music, crafts, games, and other kid-friendly activities. For instance, in Spanish programs for kids, the teacher might provide the kids with toy farm animals to play with while teaching a Spanish song about them. Older children may concentrate on learning about the local culture and conversational and language skills through activities like cooking and folk dancing.

It is the ideal length and size for your child. Some schools provide private classes, which let students learn at their own pace, and group lessons, which accommodate six to eight students at once. Classes may go anything from, say, 45 minutes to as long as 90 minutes. Inquire if you can observe a class before enrolling your child in any program so that you can determine whether it’s the right one for him and whether he will enjoy it over time.

4. Allow your kid to read books.

Children’s books are also an ideal starting point for teaching a foreign language since they have a simple vocabulary and cover the fundamentals of language grammar and organization. The love of reading that toddlers have from birth can only grow if you read to them. You’ll see that they advance tremendously every day just by reading books.

However, you can ensure that older children are actively reading in the new language for it to persist even though they might need more encouragement. If you provide children access to foreign editions of the books they adore, their reading abilities in the new language will advance.

5. Discover TV series in that language

Try using screen time as a different medium for language exposure.  For instance, you can alter the Netflix language settings if you are a parent of young children and want to watch their favorite show. Most shows are available in multiple languages, and children who are already familiar with the language won’t have as much trouble following their favorite program in a foreign language as you might think. Kids are more tolerant and accepting than adults when it comes to watching something in another language.

Look up famous television programs or comedies for teenagers in the language they’re learning. They can learn to follow spoken discourse and become familiar with colloquialisms or slang by routinely sitting down to watch a 20-minute show of typical conversation in their preferred foreign language.
